Hehr maintains pressure on Education Minister
Calgary"Alberta Liberal Education Critic Kent Hehr isn’t backing down after the Education Minister brushed aside concerns about education cuts.
“Of course people are terrified"everyone knows what happened in the 1990s when the Klein government cut education funding. It’s always the most vulnerable who bear the brunt of Tory mismanagement.”
Hehr says that the cuts to programs like AISI and ESL would not have been necessary had the Tories done a better job of cutting back wasteful spending. The Alberta Liberals have called for a number of cost-saving measures like cutting down the number of ministries and reducing hosting and advertising expenses.
“The government could have easily maintained these education support programs had they heeded our advice to slash seven cabinet ministries and government advertising and public relations expenditures. Their refusal to do so speaks volumes about Tory priorities.”
Despite the Minister’s attempt to downplay the issue, Hehr says that he will continue to stand up for teachers and parents, who have all said that staff cuts will happen and the vulnerable will suffer the most.
“The minister flip-flops between apologizing for the hard times the budget is creating and saying that it’s a good budget. It can’t be both, so which view will he stand by?”
